Second Semester - Week 1

Well our semester is underway! Despite the fact that our break seems to have flown by, here we are again! We have an exciting new year to begin! There are a few things that I really want to focus on this semester. The first is writing. We really need to be refining our writing skills. That means proper citation, thesis statements and proofreading! Parents, I encourage you to keep reading your student's papers. Also, I take a great deal of time to go through each paper and make revisions and comments. Please look at them so that you are not repeating the same mistakes!

The second thing I want to focus on is participation from everyone. I want to make sure that we have a "safe" place for everyone to feel willing to share their thoughts, opinions etc. So be courteous. When someone is talking, don't talk over them. Take the time to listen! Be bold! If you have a thought you want to express, go for it! No one is going to ridicule you or discount your opinion!

For next week, the Advanced Math B students need to do the problems for Lesson 88. We will cover Lessons 89 & 90 next week.

In Shakespeare/Poetry, read Chapter 5 of The Roar on the Other Side and do the poetry exercises. Bring your poetry to class and we will be reading them aloud.

In Logic, we previewed Chapters 1 and 2. Read the chapters again and do the daily exercises for each chapter. Next week we will cover Chapter 3.

In US History, we assigned the debate topic for week 5. It is dealing with the issue of whether the US military should be allowed to use torture tactics if necessary for national security. We assigned affirmative and negative teams. The teams are:

You need to do general research on your topic this week and come in next week with some information so that we can break down our 4 subtopics. Also, bring your Civil War essay that was in the assignment guide as due before break. Read Chapter 10 and add to your fact timeline.

Parents, please remember tuition is due. Also, as we face the winter season, I'll remind you of our inclement weather policy. If there is bad weather on a Tuesday and school is cancelled in Guilford County, then we will not have class. We will either add the day onto the end of the year, or see if we can make it up in the same week. That will be dependent on the church's availability and everyone's schedule.
